“Körnung” for ensemble (2012-2013)
For a long time I have been attracted by topic of grain and noise in old photos. I tried to reproduce in this piece a similar thing. I like this feature in old photos, and something which is big but consists of small parts, almost atoms. So I chose special kinds of sounds like white noise, or very silent and fragile sounds, which are quite simple but together they are atoms of some complex structure.

EnsembleSpectrum is a chamber ensemble with a focus on the 20th and 21st century music. It has fruited from the aspirations of the students of the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava to introduce lesser-known works, which often represent a mental and technical challenge. The initiative for setting up the ensemble was born in Daniel Matej’s class of improvised music. Current members of the ensemble have graduated or attended universities of performing arts (VŠMU, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Kuntuniversität Graz). They work in various Slovak orchestras and musical bodies. The ensemble is artistically directed by the composer and conductor Matej Sloboda, who is also the dramaturge of the concert program. Since their inception in 2012, they have featured over thirty new works, with a number of Slovak premieres of foreign authors. They have been actively involved in several improvisation projects, such as Eddie Prévost's workshop at the NEXT festival. The ensemble performed at several music festivals – Melos-Etos, New Slovak Music - Epoché, Konfrontácie, Orfeus, Asynchrónie, and Bach Tribute. The repertoire of the EnsembleSpectrum contains Slovak authors representing the avant-garde of the 1960s (J. Sixta, I. Hrušovský, V. Bokes) and foreign music authors of the 20th and 21st century, such as C. Debussy, D. Milhaud, G. Grisey, Ph. Hurel, H. Abrahamsen, A. Schnittke, S. Sciarrino and others. They also feature works by young authors and initiate writing of new songs contained in the debut CD - NEW DAWN.
